Walks in Port Stephens

Picturesque walks in Port Stephens, to soak up the unique natural beauty.

Relax, recharge and enjoy the sunshine against the beautiful backdrop of Port Stephens unique scenery, with white sand beaches and coastal coves you may even spot a whale or a dolphin or two.

Known for its pristine natural beauty, it’s a stunning area to slow down, explore, and adventure.
Amble along the spectacular walking trails, whilst taking in the breathtaking panoramic views on some of the best coastal walks in New South Wales (and arguably, across Australia)!

Port Stephens is the perfect place to feel at home in nature. This stunning coastal region offers a range of walking tracks to conquer, promising spectacular views of the picturesque coast, native forests, sealife and wildlife.

It’s been hard to choose our favourites, but here’s a list of our top three walks in Port Stephens to experience the peace and tranquillity this beautiful region has to offer.

Tomaree Head Summit Walk

There’s something innately grounding about ambling along the spectacular walking trails local to Port Stephens. And at Tomaree Head Summit walk, you’ll feel exactly that, perfectly grounded.

Here, nature’s gifts are all around us, with the coastal walk offering spectacular views of the Tomaree National Park, sand dunes and diverse coastal bushlands.

Now we should warn you that this track can get steep in places, but trust us, it’s worth it when you get to the top, and of course, you can take your time and make stops whenever you need.

At the peak, you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views along the coastline and overlooking the town from its peaceful viewing platforms, surrounded by only the sounds of nature, and the waves lapping the golden shores where the sea meets thousand year old granite cliffs.

We particularly love the Southern platform where you’ll spy Wreck beach, Fingal Island and Port Stephens lighthouse. Or wander over to the north platform for views of Yacaaba Headland, Broughton Island and Cabbage Tree Island.

Top tip: Take some binoculars as you might be lucky to see some dolphins out in the ocean! And a picnic for lunch at the top!

Stroll along the glorious golden sands as the sun meets the horizon, at One Mile Beach.

A beautiful walk, barefoot through the sand, backed by bushland sand dunes, and of course, stunning views of the ocean, where if you are lucky you’ll spot schools of dolphins playing and whales breaching in the Summer months.

One Mile Beach feels more remote than it actually is, and usually, you won’t encounter too many people strolling along the sand. Perfect for a romantic walk in the morning, or as the sun sets. Or take the family and make a day of it, swimming in the ocean, playing and sunbaking on the crisp white sands.

Our suggestion is to start at the southern end and walk north towards Samurai Point. But you can pretty much just turn up anywhere along this stretch and walk as far as you please. It really is the ultimate in holiday relaxation!

Tilligerry Peninsula Circuit

The Tilligerry Peninsula is one of our favourite local full-day walks, but there are many options for shorter walks along this route, should you prefer something a little more relaxing.
Start your walk at the end of Daniel Crescent, Lemon Tree Passage, where you’ll find plenty of parking options and follow the winding paths along the shoreline taking in the breathtaking views of Tilligerry Creek.

The best time to do this walk, we’ve found, is at low tide. Or, be prepared to slip off your shoes and wade through the water, if the tide is high.. Which we found quite refreshing, and certainly added to the adventure.

Once you reach Mallabula, meander the winding shoreline until you reach Tanilba Bay Boardwalk. A beautiful spot for a picnic. Then wind your way back round to reach your starting point, taking in the beauty of all the natural habitats this walk has to offer.

Opting for a shorter walk? Be sure to stop in at Tilligerry Habitat on the return home, a beautiful flora and fauna reserve on the Tanilba Bay foreshore, for more breathtaking memorable moments.
